Chocolate, Chili and Lime Bread

If there's two things I routinely fail at, it would have to be men and baking bread.
Probably not a coincidence that both of them tend to be bad for me too.
But when a Green & Blacks Chocolate cooking book was conveniently left out on the bench at work (thanks Laura), I couldn't help but have a crack at one of their recipes; Chocolate, Chili and Lime Bread.
I just recently read a vegan blog where the author had a category labeled 'failures' which I think is a brilliant idea. I try so many recipes that I don't blog about that fail for one reason or another and that I know changing a small detail or two in the recipe would make all the difference to the result.
So in light of this, I'm going to put this recipe in the blog even though my bread turned out a bit on the doughy side, possibly because I didn't read the last instructions correctly and left the bread in the pan the entire cooking time, but more than likely just due to me and bread being natural enemies.

Chocolate, Chili and Lime Bread

Ingredients:

15g active dry yeast
25 g brown sugar
400 ml warm water
450g strong white bread flour
1 teaspoon  salt
125g dark chocolate, chopped
1 ½  fresh limes
1  dried red chilli pepper
50 ml olive oil

Preparation:

Mix together the yeast, sugar and 200 ml warm water to activate the
yeast. Set aside in a warm place for about 15 minutes.
Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl. Add the chocolate and the zest of one of
the limes. Thinly slice and chop the lime, skin on, and add half to the mixture with
the juice from the other lime half. De-seed and finely chop the chilli pepper and
add to the mixture. Add in the olive oil and mix roughly.
Once the yeast has become activated and frothy, add it to the mixture and mix
thoroughly by hand.
As the liquid is absorbed, add a further 50ml of the warm water and
continue to mix. When a dough ball starts to form, use your judgement to add as
much of the remaining warm water as required. The dough should be moist but
not wet. If the dough becomes too wet, sprinkle in some extra flour to absorb the
excess moisture. Continue to work the dough for 15 minutes.
Place the dough on a floured baking tray. Cover with a clean damp dishcloth and
leave in a warm place for at least 20 minutes to prove.
Preheat the oven to 180°C / gas mark 4.

Lightly oil the loaf pan with olive oil and add dough, pressing down and shaping
gently, then turn off the oven and place the pan in the oven to stand for a further
15 minutes.
Turn the oven on and preheat to 220°C gas mark 7 and bake for 20
minutes.
After 20 minutes, turn the bread out of the pan and tap the bottom with a wooden
spoon - it should sound hollow. If it does, place the loaf on a wire rack to cool; if it
doesn’t, return to the oven (without the pan) for a further 5 minutes.

The gorgeous chocolate heart company

It's been a while since my last blog, too much good food being eaten and no time to write.
Christmas and New Years flew past in a haze of dark chocolate, vegan haggis and mulled wine. My stomach and liver is finally beginning to recover and I'm ready to break in my new kitchen and create some delicious treats.

But first I must pay tribute to my new favourite post gym treat. I've always been a sucker for truffles, which usually results in my jeans miraculously becoming smaller (I swear it's the dryer), but today in the Real Foods sale bin I discovered a yummy little ball of chocolately goodness that won't hurt the waistline... too badly.

A 'High Energy Superfood Berriball' by The Gorgeous Chocolate Heart Company.. That's actually their name, I'm not just being overly kind.
It's 60% Cocao 40% other goodies (ground almonds, cranberries, sour cherries, raisins, apricots and chia seeds) and 100% natural!
It's raw, wheat free, dairy free, SUGAR FREE, and gluten free. Plus it actually tastes good.

They've got tonnes of other flavours which I can't wait to sample (all for the blogs sake of course), take a look at their website http://chocheart.co.uk/

Gotta love a company that's dedicated to offering an alternative for chocoholics.

The Chocolate Tree Cafe aka Heaven

Chocolate Tree Cafe

I finally made a visit to The Chocolate Tree Cafe. I have now been in Edinburgh for six weeks and I have been meaning to visit this cafe for the past five.
And I was not in the slightest bit let down by my built up expectations, it was everything I dreamed it would be.
I had a slice of the vegan chocolate and hazelnut cake (which turned out to be a two person job) and a lovely vegan hot chocolate.

Over half of their chocolate bars are 100% vegan, and all of the chocolate truffles.
I'm talking dark chocolate with Rose Pepper, Rooibus Chai, or Mango and Chilli.
They have vegan hot chocolate, soy milk for your fair trade coffee, and a daily selection of vegan cakes. They even make cakes to order.

And I've left the best to last... Chocolate Chilli Sorbet. Mmmmm

The interior of the cafe is cute and cosy and impossible not to curl up with a book and sigh with delight.

Too lazy to walk to the cafe? They also sell their chocolates at the Farmers Market every Saturday morning.

I'm sorry Wellington Cafe, your coffee is great and we had a good time together but I've found someone else...

Little truffles made with love

If I was going to design heaven, it would be made of Booja Booja truffles.

A Norfolk based team who have been operating for the past 11 years (how have I only just heard of them??), everything they make is dairy free, vegan and organic and full of love.
They use Pacari Chocolate in Ecuador, a family owned business dedictated to the organic way and to preserving Ecuador's native Arriba Nacional cacao.

The other day I went to Real Foods supermarket to buy myself something sweet (I'm kind to myself) and I found a huge selection of Booja Booja treats.

They have so many scrumptious flavours, including my favourite 'midnight express' a heavenly expresso truffle that makes me want to sing and dance and make friends with strangers!!

Not only do Booja Booja make delicious sweet treats, they also provide beautiful messages hidden in the bottom of the box that, however unintentionally, inspired my mind to float away on a romantic daydream.

Over the next few days whenever I felt like a little truffle of happiness I had a Booja Booja. As I was about to throw away the box, a little piece of glossy card fell out of the bottom and lay face down on the ground. I picked it up and thinking it was just rubbish was just about to throw it away, when the writing caught my eye...

"Love is what we fear to do until we fall in love"

I spent the rest of the day with a smile playing across my lips.

What more could you want in a truffle?
